n 1 cap : a genus of widely distributed herbs and shrubs (family Euphorbiaceae) 2 : the dried root of a plant of the genus Stillingia (S. sylvatica) formerly used as a sialagogue, diuretic, and laxative Stil•ling•fleet, Benjamin (1702-1771), British botanist. Stillingfleet is famous for helping to establish the Linnaean system of botany in England. One of Linnaeus's earliest defenders, he published in 1759 the first fundamental treatise in English on the principles of Linnaeus. The genus name Stilingia was introduced in 1767.
