De·man·sia

n :  a genus of snakes of the family Elapidae comprising the venomous Australian brown snake and related forms
 
van Die•men, Anthony (1593-1645),
Dutch colonial administrator. Van Diemen was governor-general of the Dutch East Indies from 1636. During his tenure he greatly extended Dutch commerce and influence in the area under his control. In 1842 the genus Demansia was named in his honor by the British naturalist John Edward Gray (1800-1875).
