Wan·gen·steen apparatus
n : the apparatus used in Wangensteen suction - called also Wangensteen appliance Wangensteen, Owen Harding (1898-1981), American surgeon. Wangensteen enjoyed a career-long association with the University of Minnesota medical school and hospital. From 1937 to 1970 he was also coeditor of the medical journal Surgery. He did research on bowel obstruction, appendicitis, the genesis of peptic ulcers and their surgical management, and on the etiology of gallstones. In 1956 he published a study of cancer of the esophagus and stomach. He devised the Wangensteen apparatus in 1932 for the relief of distension in cases of intestinal obstruction.
