n : an encephalitis that occurs epidemically in Japan and other Asian countries in the summer, is caused by a flavivirus transmitted by mosquitoes (esp. Culex tritaeniorhyncus), and usu. produces a subclinical infection but may cause acute meningoencephalomyelitis .
