n : CARBOLFUCHSIN PAINT Cas•tel•la•ni, Aldo (1878-1971), Italian physician. Castellani was a specialist in tropical diseases. His numerous contributions to tropical medicine include the discovery in 1903 of a species of trypanosome (Trypanosoma gambiense) in the spinal fluid of patients suffering from sleeping sickness, the discovery in 1905 that yaws is caused by a spirochete (Treponema pertenue), and the isolation of new strains of fungi causing dermatoses.
