n :  a genus of trees and shrubs (as cherries, plums, peaches, and the apricot) of the rose family (Rosaceae) that are widely distributed in temperate regions, that include many whose fruit are used for food, and that have usu. serrate leaves often with glands along the petiole or at the base of the blade and flowers usu. in umbellate clusters or racemes which appear in spring and often before the leaves and are succeeded by an often smooth globose fruit with a bloom on the surface .
