essential hypertension

n :  abnormally high systolic and diastolic blood pressure occurring in the absence of any evident cause and resulting typically in marked hypertrophic and degenerative changes in small arteries, hypertrophy of the heart, and often more or less severe kidney damage - called also primary hypertension  - see MALIGNANT HYPERTENSION  .
