n :  poisoning of livestock by selenium due to ingestion of plants grown in seleniferous soils that is characterized in the acute phase by diffuse necrosis and hemorrhage resulting from capillary damage and in chronic poisoning by degenerative and fibrotic changes esp. of the liver and of the skin and its derivatives - called also alkali disease  - see BLIND STAGGERS  .
