Hunter, John (1728-1793), British anatomist and surgeon. Hunter ranks as one of the greatest surgeons in medical history. He made a number of very important contributions to the practice of surgery which based it on sound biological principles and transformed it into a scientific profession. He also devised an operation for a popliteal aneurysm. An account of the operation, published in 1786 by Sir Everard Home (1756-1832), included a description of Hunter's canal.
